Journey for Change
WHAT
WE DO
Upcoming JFC Events
The central focus of JFC is development of the educational film program and corollary learning support materials. We are currently early in the production of the Slave Trail Walk video, with a concept video completed from our November 2023 initial filming. The upcoming steps for the next several months are as follows:
Complete Filming: additional filming will be completed in Fall 2024 a Spring 2025, both scenes from Richmonders walking the trail, and interviews with walk participants and local experts.
-
Quarterly BOD Meetings: The Board will offer regular guidance on preparation of the film, associated educational materials, and outreach and engagement strategy. The second meeting, on Aug. 19, 2024, will include a presentation and discussion with Rev. Ben Campbell, who developed the narratives for the Richmond Slave Trail historical markers, and authored, Richmond’s Unhealed History (2012).
-
Fundraising to complete the Project: We have developed a grant application for the Commonwealth History Fund, administered by the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. Other funding opportunities are also being explored.
-
Complete Filming: Additional filming will be completed in Fall, 2024 and Spring 2025, both scenes from Richmonders walking the trail, and interviews with walk participants and local experts.
Related Events
As has been noted, JFC grew out of the “Just Faith” group formed at St. Edward’s church in the Fall of 2021, following the killing of George Floyd and the extensive local protests that occurred in Richmond and so many other locations. The Just Faith group has also hosted the following racial justice oriented activities:

-
Nov. 2022: hosted a viewing and discussion of a film program on the life of Sister Thea Bowman (“Going Home like a Shooting Star”) with over 20 parishioners attending. This program gave increased attention to November being Black Catholic History month.
-
“Zke” Zimmerman author program: over 50 people attended and participated in small group discussions of topics raised in Col. Zimmerman’s book “A Call to Share” on Feb. 11, 2023.
-
My Neighbor’s Voice: Three sessions of MNV, a facilitated listening table exercise, were held in March and September 2023. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to share their thoughts and life experiences on a wide range of topics in a welcoming and accepting setting. Several commented on how the structure of MNV allows participants to truly get to know each other.

Upcoming: This Fall (2024) St. Edward's Just Faith members will host a series of video viewings and discussions of the "Saintly Six", six African-Americans who are on the path to formal designation as Saints within the Catholic Church. This series is being done in partnership with Virginia Catholics for Racial Justice (VCRJ).
